Getting started

Set up your dartboard for a proper home game

Check the bull height, measure from the board face and give your throwing space a little thought.

Measure to the bull, not the top of the board

For a standard steel-tip setup, the centre of the bull is 1.73 metres above the floor. Mount the board securely with 20 at the top. Check the height after hanging rather than relying only on the bracket position, because the bracket and board centre may not line up the way you expect.

Keep the board face vertical and stable. A surround protects the wall from some misses, but it does not make the whole room safe. Give the area around and behind the board enough protection for your space and equipment. Keep people and pets away from the throwing line and target while a player is throwing.

The throwing distance starts at the board face

The horizontal steel-tip distance is 2.37 metres from the face of the board to the throwing line. Do not measure from the wall behind it: that makes the actual distance too short by the board’s depth. Use a plumb line or a straight vertical reference to mark the floor directly below the face, then measure horizontally.

Mark a line that is easy to see and hard to move accidentally. Players should throw from behind it. Soft-tip equipment can use different dimensions, so consult its rules instead of assuming the steel-tip measurement applies to every electronic board.

Put the scorer where it helps

Place your phone or tablet beside the playing area, out of the path of a missed dart. Use a stable stand and a readable brightness level. The keep-awake option asks supported browsers to keep the display on during a game; if your browser does not support it, adjust your device’s display timeout yourself.

Before running a darts night with friends, play one short practice game and check that everyone can read the active score. Enter a mistaken visit and undo it once, so you know how to correct a score. Then save the player names you will use. A few minutes of setup makes the first real match easier to enjoy.

Put it into practice.
